This deliciously simple and healthy post is being sponsored by Daisey Fresh featuring their incredible 100% Natural & Organic fridge filters. All opinions of these ABSOLUTELY AMAZING filters are mine.
So if you recall from my Strawberry Compote with Grilled Angel Food Cake Cubes I introduced you to a revolutionary new product created by Daisey Fresh. What they’ve created are these little filters (with holding cartridge) that suction cup to your produce and veggie drawers. You place these biodegradable filters that are 100% organic and natural (which means no chemicals or foreign stuff getting into your foods) into your fridge and through some sort of genius magic they keep your fruits and veggies fresher up to 2-3 times longer than if you just placed them into the drawers themselves! I know, right! That’s awesome!
This recipe is one that I make quite often especially in the summer months. Living in Pittsburgh we have 2 temperatures in the summer – 90F and 875% humidity or 85F with 875% humidity. Even with ac it’s just too hot to cook and dare I say…eat. I know.. who am I? I love to eat, we all do – that’s why you’re here. Well okay unless your family then you’re obligated by blood. *wink*
Ah yes SUMMER is FINALLY here!!! What better way to kick off the season with some great recipes under your belt!
I can remember as a kid it seemed like every weekend we were having a cookout with our neighbors and friends. The food was simple – watermelon, burgers & dogs, potato & macaroni salad, baked beans, chips, beer and tons of desserts. We’d always have horseshoes competitions going, tether ball for the kids and volleyball for the bigger kids and adults. Sometimes we’d start up a softball game (we had 41 acres and also a full size football field) while the music was blaring (another advantage of living in the middle of no where). Mom would cook for days on end and either I’d be in the kitchen helping her or out in the yard doing my best to help cut grass – yes one year I took out scissors to help cut that grass as I was too little to ride the tractor or use the push mower but I was bound and determined to help.
So living here in da ‘Burgh (Pittsburgh for those that aren’t from da ‘Burgh) it’s been wickedly nasty weather wise ranging anywhere from veritable monsoons and flooding to Sahara-like heat waves with 9,473% humidity to yes, low temps in the 50’s at night. It’s a wonder the entire city isn’t sick from the influx in the temps.
Well one benefit, if you will about really hot and humid weather is that you 1 – don’t want to cook and 2 – you don’t want to eat. The thing is, you’re dying of thirst and it’s often difficult to find something to quench it. Yeah I know “drink water”. I do but ya kinda get tired of it. And I’m sorry but soda/pop whatever you call it NEVER quenches a thirst on a hot summer day. Well okay, maybe for me it doesn’t. This time, I wanted something that I knew was awesome tasting, had flavor and would quench my thirst.
This strawberry basil lemonade chiller fit the bill!
And yes, you can make this as sinful and adult-like you want OR it’s perfectly awesome as a kid-friendly drink!
But if you do add alcohol, please drink responsibly and never, EVER drink and drive! You’re too important to the TKW Family!

So I’ve been showing you every Friday for the past 3 months how to incorporate SI03‘s AMAZING Syntrax Protein Powders into various recipes albeit savory, desserts, breads, muffins, main meals, etc. This week I wanted to go back to the basics when it comes to protein powders. Most people put them in their drinks either by just adding milk, juice or water and shaking them. Now I have 2 of these a day this way and LOVE it but every once in a while I want ‘bad’. I want a milkshake. Now traditionally milkshakes are made with whole milk and ice cream. Sure you can use frozen yogurt and skim milk but for me, I don’t really care for the taste. Plus frozen yogurt isn’t always that healthy for you or that much lower in fat/calories. Or if it is, you may suffer with the lack of taste. Don’t get me wrong though as there are some killer frozen yogurt places around. There’s one actually by my work that has the BEST Salted Caramel frozen yogurt.
Well one night post workout I was craving a milkshake in the WORST way. I think it’s because I had to make Mr. Fantabulous one (a ‘real’ one) and since the man doesn’t gain an ounce he can have the whole milk, cream and ice cream. If I even look at it and my thighs turn to jello! However I still made myself a shake that was equally as awesome as him (actually he liked mine more than his) and 9 bajillion times more healthier! PLUS it’s packed with protein!!!
See I didn’t use ice cream or frozen yogurt at all. Sure it has milk in it but I used frozen banana slices.
Yep, good ol’ nanners. Note.. you MUST peel them before freezing! Use the link in the recipe below on how to Freeze Bananas. See when you whip up frozen banana slices in the blender or food processor it whips up just like creamy soft serve ice cream.
I know, right! BONUS!!! Potassium in my shake!
