So did you survive Thanksgiving? Are you all turkey’d-out yet? And did you become sluggish after eating and need a nap? Yeah me too HOWEVER it wasn’t from eating turkey it was from the 8 hours of cooking, 12 minutes of eating and 1 hour of clean up that made me sleepy. Plus the fact that even though it was Thanksgiving we still went to the gym. I know, we’re insane but it’s a lifestyle choice. Plus I LOVE food, like I really love food and if I didn’t work out I wouldn’t be the size of the house, I WOULD BE the house! LOL
It’s funny though as I wasn’t sure what to expect at the gym – would there be other crazy folks there like us or would we have it to ourselves. Honestly it was pretty busy which honestly made me smile. One it made me realize that I wasn’t the only crazy person there but also that there are so many out there dedicated to a healthier lifestyle. I met this one guy there that was just going hard core and when we started to chit chat he said he was in training. I asked him for what – some race or competition. He just smiled, patted his pudgy belly and said “dinner!” I busted out laughing so hard! It’s all good as at least he was working out preemptive-style.
So back to dinner and being all tired, did you know that turkey contains no more of the amino acid tryptophan than other kinds of poultry. In fact, turkey actually has slightly less tryptophan than chicken. So they why do we get all sleepy after dinner and if you’re like the men in my house, disappear after dinner only to be found on the lazy boy, hand on full belly, football on tv and snoring like a champ? Thanksgiving is a time when folks feel the need to overeat. We stuff ourselves with the bounty before us and generally eat way too much. When people overeat food, the digestion process takes a lot of energy. Don’t incriminate the turkey that you ate, incriminate the three plates of food that you piled high! LOL
Now for me I’m not a big eater on Thanksgiving. Even though I love to cook it, it’s tiring as there is a lot of prep work and side dishes to make. By the time I carve, plate, set the table and serve I’m pooped. I am never EVER clean as I will always have some type of food splattered on my, flour prints on my butt, a rogue piece of stuffing will inevitably end up in my hair and at least one burn mark on my fingers from those damn candied yams.
I call ’em pot ruiners as they are a PITA to make as you can’t leave them be for fear of burning the sugar. It splatters and spits like the witch it is and they stink to high heaven. But the man loves ’em as by the time they are done they are covered in a caramelized candied coating that just melt in your mouth. I’m sure they taste awesome but I get too ticked off making them to allow myself to enjoy them. I blame Mama Fantabulous for these things as she used to make them all the time for the boys and now Mr. Fantabulous requires them for the holidays. They are SUPER high in fat and sugar and so incredibly bad for you but he loves them and if I can make him happy with them, I’ll suffer through making them.
Yes, I’m that awesome of a wife *wink*
This past week was a short week for me work-wise but nothing short of short on work. But I’m still loving the job and meeting new people every day. I miss my old work family but fortunately I’m able to keep in touch with them on here and other avenues.
The big question here.. did you Black Friday shop? I went out but not for those sales. We hit the gym in the early afternoon then I had to do normal grocery shopping and return something at the store. When I got to Sam’s club those poor workers looked beat. Like someone just came in, opened up a can of whoop butt on ’em and went to town. The one lady said it was a mad house there earlier. Thankfully there wasn’t a must-get-or-I’ll-die-mad-rush for milk! LOL Next I went to Kohl’s to return a pair of shoes that I found out after I came home and tried ’em on that they didn’t fit. I know, I know, I should have tried ’em on at the store but again, I hate shopping. Now that store, when I walked in, looked like a war zone! Sweaters were just thrown about, jeans tossed on top of the racks, shoes all over the place and so forth. Once I fought my way through the crowd I made it to the return desk where the lady literally had her head on the counter resting. I cleared my throat and she slowly held her head up trying to force a smile.
I met her with a warm, comforting smile and spoke softly asking if I could just return these. I told her take her time and if she wanted to take a breather I was okay with it. I said “I was going to ask you how bad it was this morning but by judging from the state the store was in and how tired she looked, it must have been rough.” She said “it was awful. People are just so… so… I don’t get why they are just so mean over a sweater or crock pot. It makes me almost hate the holidays anymore.” I felt bad for her as no one should hate the holidays. As I left I pulled out some mints from my purse and said “Here, it’s all I have but remember, Christmas is about hope, love and faith. Don’t let others change your view on it. Be better than those that are negative and remember there is still good out there.” To see her smile and eyes light up just made my day.
Now it’s time to get back to work and figure out what in God’s name I’m going to get Mr. Fantabulous. The man has everything and the stuff he does like I can’t pick out as I have no clue what’s good and what’s not (guitar crap). But this year, this year I have something up my sleeve. Unfortunately I can’t spill it as he reads these (hi baby!) so for now mum’s the word!
Here’s to one amazing week for us!
