Where are all my avocado lovers? C’mon raise your hands. Wait, you don’t like avocados? Have you ever tried one (as she looks at her darling sister Dianna and gives her “the look”)??? My sister will immediately say “Ew no, I don’t like them” yet when I ask if she’s tried one I get the “Nope but I don’t like them.” LOL God she sounds like me growing up. I was that kid with the perpetual squinched up “ewwwwwwwwwwwwww no way am I eating that” face even though I most likely never had it. My parents would beg me to try it “Try it Lori. You might like it!” Nope… not gonna! If I had a dollar for every time I hear that I’d never have to work. Yet now, OMG I’m buying 6-8 a week. I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE them! Just do a search on my site for keyword avocado and you’ll get a ton of recipes using them.
For me I buy mine in bulked bags as it’s cheaper and easier. However finding that perfect bag is hard. You want one, maybe two ready to eat and the other note quite ripe so by day 3 another is ready. Yeah, doesn’t happen that way. So either you’re forced to buy the bag that all of them are ripe or none of them. I tend to go for none of them however then I’m stuck waiting for them to ripen. And sadly they ripen all at once.
So on today’s Tuesday’s Tip with The Kitchen Whisperer I’m sharing you how to Fast Ripen an Avocado.
- Go to store and buy not ripe avocados, a paper bag and either a red or golden delicious apple or a banana.
- When you get home place one of the not ripe avocados in the bag with either the apple or banana.
- Fold the bag shut tightly so no light gets in. You want to ‘trap’ them in there. Do not use a plastic bag. You want them to breathe.
- Place the bag off to the side and let it go for 24 hours.
- The next day open up the bag and the avocado should be ripe and ready to go.
So why does this work? Apples and bananas give off ethylene which is a natural food ripening agent. By ‘trapping’ the avocado in the bag with the fruit you’re speeding up the ripening process of the avocado. Pretty cool, huh?

I could live on Avocados! This is a good tip as we buy them at Costco and like you said, they are either all ready to eat or not one of them is ready. My breakfast every morning is 2 pieces of toast with half an avocado divided between them and Cholula sprinkled on top! Never get tired of it!

I love it too that way Renee – My personal fav is cilantro, lime juice, sea salt and pepper on toast with just a splash of hot sauce!
