Tuesday’s Tip with The Kitchen Whisperer – Yogurt, the next best marinade!

We all love dry rubs, bbq sauces but did you know that Yogurt makes an AMAZING meat marinade? Find out why today!

So I love yogurt. It can be plain (yes some people actually eat plain <as-in non vanilla>), flavored, Greek, homemade and pretty much must every other type. I love it with fruits, oats, chocolate, bacon (hello.. bacon goes with literally EVERYTHING!), granola. Mix it with other stuff (my go-to stuff for mayo-based stuff) or simply just when I want a great snack. BUT… did you know that marinating meats in yogurt it’s probably one of the BEST ways to tenderize meat?

Yeah, really!  Scouts honor! Well okay so I technically am not a scout nor but I still am telling you the truth. So not all marinades are made the same. Those that are acidic or citrus-based when used on poultry can actually do the opposite. If left in for an overnight type stint, they can actually toughen the meat and thus produce you with rubbery chicken that pretty much is the consistency of a tire.

I’m not saying don’t do this as trust me I LOVE me some citrus shrimp or pineapple chicken. You can marinate them in those types of items but you just have to watch how much and how long. Shrimp actually will cook in a citrus marinade if left in long enough. Sure we can get into the whole debate of ceviche and cooked shrimp. but that’s another battle.

Breakout the yogurt, season it up for a killer marinade!

Skinny Blueberry Power Smoothie

This deliciously simple and healthy post is being sponsored by Daisey Fresh featuring their incredible 100% Natural & Organic fridge filters.  All opinions of these ABSOLUTELY AMAZING filters are mine.

So if you recall from my Strawberry Compote with Grilled Angel Food Cake Cubes I introduced you to a revolutionary new product created by Daisey Fresh. What they’ve created are these little filters (with holding cartridge) that suction cup to your produce and veggie drawers.  You place these biodegradable filters that are 100% organic and natural (which means no chemicals or foreign stuff getting into your foods) into your fridge and through some sort of genius magic they keep your fruits and veggies fresher up to 2-3 times longer than if you just placed them into the drawers themselves!  I know, right!  That’s awesome!

Skinny Blueberry Power Smoothie

This recipe is one that I make quite often especially in the summer months. Living in Pittsburgh we have 2 temperatures in the summer – 90F and 875% humidity or 85F with 875% humidity.  Even with ac it’s just too hot to cook and dare I say…eat. I know.. who am I?  I love to eat, we all do – that’s why you’re here.  Well okay unless your family then you’re obligated by blood. *wink*

Whether it’s for breakfast, post workout or because it’s too hot to cook, you will LOVE this smoothie!

Protein Packed Yogurt Banana Oats.. the perfect anytime snack!

So if you’re like me, there are those days by 10am you’re ready to chew your arm off.  It’s past breakfast, too early for lunch but your stomach has other ideas.  Or the opposite occurs.  You’ve already had lunch and it’s now 2-2:30ish.  You have another 2-4 hours before dinner and there is no way you will make it.  You honestly believe your stomach is going to eat itself if it doesn’t get sustenance.  Well fear not!  Here is a snack you can have that is healthy, packed with protein AND super scrumptious!  The biggest thing to keep in mind is that it’s a SNACK as in not a real meal nor should it be loaded up with stuff.

SNACK – A snack is a portion of food often smaller than a regular meal, generally eaten between meals.

Got it?  Remember that… SMALL PORTION.

THIS is my go-to snack when I’m Starvin’ like Marvin and could seriously chew my arm off!

Now with my being off work right now for a few more week with having surgery and all, I’m very limited to what I can do in the kitchen (which is seriously driving me crazy!  I neeeeeeeeeeeeed to be in the kitchen here Mr. Surgeon!).  THIS has been something I can make easily or better yet, Mr. Fantabulous can make for me.  I don’t have to worry about eating unhealthy stuff or too much as right now I have been banned from the gym and any type of working out (again Mr. Surgeon, we really REALLY need to discuss this!  I neeeeeeeeeeed to work out here.  I live to run, pump iron and whip up awesomeness in the kitchen). LOL

Ready to chew your arm off?

Boozy Peachy Pear Streusel Coffee Cake

With today being National Coffee Cake Day, what better way to celebrate it than with one of my all time favorite coffee cakes.  It’s so yummy and so simple and there’s booze it in it!  I mean seriously, who doesn’t love baked goods with booze?  LOL

This cake… you can just smell the peachy-ness.  This just SCREAMS SUMMER!!!  But what I love about it is the subtle hint of pears in the background. And let’s take a minute to talk about the booze in it.  When I was making the glaze I seriously ‘taste tested’ WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY  more than I should have but damn this stuff was so good!
