Ingredients

  • 111/2 cups flour (this will depend on what type of apple you use. If you use a softer apple, like Macintosh, use more flour)
  • 1/31/2 cup white sugar (this will depend on the sweetness of your apple)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt (table salt)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup natural apple sauce
  • 1/41/2 cup milk (again, this will depend on the amount of flour you have)
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped (peeled and cored) apples (you want smaller pieces)
  • Vegetable or canola oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil to 350F.
  2. In a bowl mix together the flour, sugar, spices, baking powder and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl beat the egg, milk and applesauce.
  4. Add the wet ingredients into the dry and combine with a spoon.
  5. Fold in the apples and mix until it’s evenly distributed.
  6. Using a small cookie scoop (do NOT make these big as the outside will burn and the insides will remain raw) drop 1 tablespoon of apple batter to the oil.
  7. Fry on each side for 3-5 minutes or until a caramel golden brown.
  8. Remove with slotted spoon and place on a paper towel.
  9. While warm add your toppings.
