This Homemade Chili Dog Sauce is thick, savory, and the only recipe you’ll ever need. It’s a bean-free, pantry-staple meat sauce that stays on the dog and tastes like it simmered all day. Perfect for your next backyard BBQ, game day nachos, or loaded fries! One bite and you’ll never go back to store-bought.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef, 80/20
  • 1 cup water, divided (or can use 1/4 cup water and 3/4 cup beef stock)
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 Tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cumin
  • 3 Tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/4-1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, add the ground beef and 1/4 cup of water. Cook over medium heat, breaking up (as fine as you’d prefer) until the meat is evenly browned. Drain and discard the liquid. Put the meat back into the pan.
  2. Place the pan back on the stove, add the remaining ingredients, stirring to combine, and bring to a simmer. Cook until most of the liquid is reduced, ~10-12 minutes. This makes a thick chili sauce, so if you’d like it looser, add a tablespoon or more water/stock.
  3. Remove from the heat and enjoy. Once cooled, transfer to an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to a week.
