With the Big Game approaching you need to step up your own game. We’re talking wearing your face paint, putting on your favorite team jersey, making sure everyone sits in their assigned seats and of course serving up some killer food.
And that’s where ConAgra and the amazing food from Walmart come into play. With one quick shopping trick you too can create this delicious Game Day Chili Cheese Crostini! Just picture it… this flavor packed crostini in one hand while using your other hand to root for big game! No plates are required to eat these bad boys which means no clean up or dirty dishes to wash!
This recipe honestly was super easy and thanks to the easy layout of my local Walmart I was in and out in no time! As I pushed my buggy (shopping cart for those of you that aren’t from Pittsburgh) into the Market Entrance I was immediately met with a rack full of freshly baked breads. It was as if the folks at Walmart read my mind and knew what I was there for.
As I went further into the store the smell of freshly baked warm bread hit me. We’re talking AMAZING! Nothing beats the smell of fresh-baked bread. It reminds me of Sunday mornings when I was little and Mom would make 6 loaves for the week. Such a homey, comforting smell. Rounding the corner I saw a wall of bread along with several racks of bread. Seriously all I wanted was a stick of butter and a loaf of that warm bread!
While I was heading back to the wall of bread into my buggy went some green onions. A little later on I’m going to share with you a killer kitchen hack that not only will blow your mind but also save you money!
Next on my list were some cans of WOLF Brand Chili by ConAgra. What makes my local Walmart store great to shop at is that it’s easily maneuverable because all of the aisles are so well marked. Plus there are always workers re-stocking the aisles so even if you’re unsure which aisle to go to these workers will go out of their way to assist you.
What’s great about WOLF chili is you’re able to choose a variety of flavors – with meat, with beans, no beans, spicy and so forth. For me, I’m a lots-of-beans in my chili lover. Some folks scoff at the thought of beans in chili. And then you have some of those folks that want the heat. WOLF Chili has you covered!
A few more ingredients went into my buggy and before I knew it my shopping was done. Seriously this store is definitely a one-stop shop at great savings!
For this recipe you really don’t need a lot of items which is great on a food budget, it’s packed with flavor and it’s perfect for cheering on your team during the Big Game! With this recipe I went with some of the no beans chili, fresh baked french bread, softened cream cheese (full fat), sour cream (full fat), chopped green onions and some shredded cheddar.
When you make this recipe you want the chili heated so you can either heat it in a pan over medium heat or just pop it into the microwave like I did for a few minutes. While the chili is warming up I preheated the oven to 425F, rack in the middle. To make crostini it’s pretty simple. For my slices since I knew they were ‘man-held’/’women-friendly’ they needed to be smaller in size but sturdy enough to hold up to the toppings. I cut my french bread into smaller 1/2″ thick rounds.
Once the oven came up to temperature into a bowl went the softened cream cheese, sour cream and some of the shredded cheddar. This got mixed together to make a thick and creamy spread. To make the crostini each slice of bread were drizzled with some olive oil (both sides) and popped into the hot oven to toast up nice and crispy.
Seriously – this cannot be any easier! A few minutes into the oven and out came the bread all toasty, crispy and begging for this super yummy chili cheese topping!
When making crostini toast slices you can make them up to 2 days ahead of time storing them in an air tight container. The same thing with the cheesy cream cheese mixture. That 3-ingredient mixture can be mixed together and stored in the fridge up to 4 days ahead of time. To make it easier for you, when you’re going to make these, just take the cheese mixture out 30 minutes prior to assembly as it’ll make the cheesy mixture more easily spreadable.
To assemble these crostini is nothing more than a simple assembly line. First thing though, turn your oven to broil – this means the cheese will melt faster which means the faster these Game Day Chili Cheese Crostinis are in your mouth! This is definitely something you can get the whole team at your house in on. Slather on some of the cheesy mixture, next top with some of that warmed WOLF chili, some more of that shredded cheddar (because one can never have enough cheese) and under the broiler for a minute or two to melt the cheese.
Finally when you pull these out of the oven, with that cheese all bubbly and the smell of hot chili filling up your kitchen top them with some chopped green onions. Speaking of green onions, I promised you a killer money-saving, awesome kitchen hack!
Did you know that you can re-grow green onions right in your kitchen! Yep! When you buy your green onions, the bulb with roots is still attached. Most just chop the onion down to the white part and discard. Stop discarding! Simply chop your onion down to the white leaving about 1 1/2 inches attached to the bulb. Place that strip, with the bulb and roots attached, in a glass jar. Place enough water into the jar to where the whole bulb is submerged. Change the water every 3 days and in about a week to two weeks you’ll see your onion growing! So next time you need more green onions simply snip some off from your growing onions and it’ll continue to re-grow!
What I love about this recipe is I’m able to produce great flavors without sacrificing taste and quality thanks to the ease of shopping at Walmart, their fresh produce and baked breads and the great flavors of ConAgra WOLF brand chili. This recipe is perfect to make right before kick off and by half time you can have another batch ready to go in minutes so there’s no need to miss any of the Big Game. When making this recipe you can serve them straight out of the oven or at room temperature. They both are awesome!
And my favorite thing about this whole recipe??? I can hold one of these crostinis in one hand and still cheer for my favorite team in the Big Game with the other. It’s a WIN! WIN! for me all around!
