Kitchen shears are one of the most versatile pieces of kitchen equipment you will ever own.  I firmly believe every kitchen should have one.  And no, you CANNOT USE your scissors you keep in your desk as kitchen shears. Okay technically you can but don’t… ever.  Kitchen shears are made for kitchen use which means they are sturdier and heavy-duty.  They are meant to cut through thicker things and even cutting up chicken.  When I make split chicken, I use my kitchen shears to split the breast cavity right down the middle.

Kitchen shears are perfect for kids to use (and adults when they aren’t comfortable with using a knife to cut things) when they are too young to use a sharp knife.  It allows them to feel included and also teaches them essential kitchen skills.

Tuesday-Tip

So what can you use kitchen shears for other than cutting through bones?

♦ Grab your can of whole tomatoes and instead of trying to chop them up with a knife, just stick your kitchen shears in the can and start cutting.  In seconds you’ll have nicely chopped tomatoes without a bit ol mess!
♦ Finely mincing or chopping up herbs
♦ Easily chops up dried fruit.  Let’s face it, chopping any dried food with a knife is virtually impossible.  It sticks, it’s tacky and it’s a pain in the butt!
♦ Don’t have a pizza cutter, use the shears!
♦ Have a toddler that needs baby-sized pieces?  Just snip, snip, snip it up!
♦ Bacon…seriously is it just me that has issues with chopping bacon with a knife?  I use my shears when I want to make small pieces
♦ Need a fancy pie crust edge?  Use your shears to snip patterns!
♦ Marshmallows – cut them suckers up with the shears easily!
♦ Some can be used to crack nuts or open bottle caps!

Nowadays most knife sets come with a pair of these but if yours didn’t, I HIGHLY recommend these ones!
