Let’s Build a Better Breakfast!

So let’s face it, breakfast is just flat out AWESOME!  I’m one of those people that’s an early riser and that LOVES kicking off my day with a great and healthy breakfast. Pretty much our whole lives we were told “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. Here’s the thing people, IT’S TRUE!  The key is starting the day off on the right foot with a complete breakfast.  You can’t skip it or think that cup of coffee is will tide you over or add any nutritional value to your diet.  Nope!  You need to have a breakfast fueled by milk, fruits and carbs.  For me I love a glass of 2% milk, a bagel and some fruit.  Today I’ve teamed up with The Great American Milk Drive to discuss some amazing products and what I do to help build my own better breakfast.

Growing up I was (and still am) a “milk baby”.  We would go through gallons upon gallons a week with us 6 kids.  Mom used to swear she should just buy a cow.  Unfortunately not every child starts off their day with milk or a healthy, better breakfast. Childhood should be filled with playing, learning and growing. But for many children who face hunger, even basic staples like milk – and the nutrients that help power childhood activities – are missing. For me I head over to my local Walmart to pick up everything I need to build my own better breakfast while supporting The Great American Milk Drive . Since the aisles and shelves are so easily marked it took me no time to find my  2% Great Value Milk, Lenders Bagels (this week I went with onion flavored) and some Del Monte Fruit Fusions.

Milk is such an amazing  thing.  It’s delicious and truly good for you.  Milk is naturally nutrient rich and powers potential – if you have access to it. Now I love bagels.  No seriously I LOVE bagels.  While you’re at Walmart make sure you grab a few bags of Lender’s bagels. They are available in the refrigerated dairy section! For me I love bagels for breakfast. By incorporating a Lender’s Bagel into your or your kid’s breakfast, you’re sustaining them all morning.  Lender’s bagels are filling which means no 10am craving or tummy rumbles.  And if your kid is like me as a kid they are picky.  However Lender’s has you covered!  Lender’s has a bagel for Everyone! Plain, Blueberry and Cinnamon-Raisin flavors are kid-friendly & great for the whole family!  And don’t even try giving me that “I don’t have time for breakfast” line. Bagels for breakfast are time-saving, easy, tasty and nutritious!  So build that better breakfast!

For me I’m also a HUGE fruit fan.  When I hear folks that say they don’t like fruit.. what’s wrong with you?  And I bet you’ve never had one of these Del Monte Fruit & Veggie Fusions!  OMG they are AWESOME!!!  Plus what is totally killer is Del Monte Fruit & Veggie Fusions is the only fruit cup product that provides 1 serving of fruits and veggies in a single cup. The veg is in the juice but you’d never know it!  I so wish these were created when I was growing up!!!

Both Lenders’ and Del Monte products also have the benefit of offering so many flavors that every kid can get a “customized” breakfast with all her favorites. Now as I said earlier we’ve all heard “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” but do you know why? From speaking with my nutritionist, to 987 bajillion research studies the evidence of why you should is overwhelming.

  1. Breakfast boosts your metabolism. Building a better breakfast with protein, fruit and carbs, you can actually boost calorie  burn throughout the day by speeding up  your metabolism.
  2. Breakfast stabilizes blood sugar. A breakfast of  lean protein and fiber helps your body process  carbohydrates better. Keeping your blood sugar  stable helps prevent hunger pangs and improves  energy levels.
  3. Starting day off with a better breakfast allows you to control your eating throughout the day and help reduce that ‘last meal of the day’ gorge.
  4. Eating breakfast gives you energy to kick-start your day and keep you going throughout the day until lunch.

And before you even say “Oh I’m on a diet, I’ll just skip breakfast.  That’ll help me lose weight.”  Okay seriously, no.  Studies have shown that by skipping breakfast you have a higher chance of actually gaining weight.  Why? Because you tend to eat more at lunch or snack way more often than you should because you’re HUNGRY.  If you eat breakfast you help stabilize your metabolism through out the day and curb those cravings and feelings to inhale the left side of your fridge shelf.

So for me I don’t skip breakfast.  And since I work a bajillion hours a week I pack my bag up the night before – an ice pack, a glass milk bottle that holds 8 ounces of milk, a wrapped bagel and a fruit cup.  So when I get up for work and am running around getting ready I don’t have to worry about making breakfast because it’s ready to go.  All I have to do is grab my bag and head out the door.  Once I get to the office and before I start my day I have a delicious breakfast that allows for me to be ready to take on the day without having those hunger pains at 10 am!
