This Smoky Chipotle Chili Spice Rub is perfect on chicken, pork, shrimp and burgers. Deep and rich spices that take your food to a whole new level! Try it on roasted veggies for an amazing twist on flavors!

I’m all about making my own seasonings and spice rubs. I’ll hit up my local restaurant supply store, Sam’s Club or even Costco and buy my spices in bulk. Then I’ll create various spice blends for me as well as for homemade foodie gifts.

This spice rub here, I’ve been making for quite some time now (i.e., before chipotle was popular and it took FOREVER to try to find chipotle powder in the store). It’s one of my favorite spice blends as it has some heat paired with those familiar Mexican spices we all know and love.

This recipe is one that I put on practically everything. It’s incredible on sheet pan meals – sprinkle some on the meat and veggies and bake away. This stuff on roasted veggies and chicken… LOOOOOOOOOVE!

Even if you didn’t want to bake anything you can totally put it on canned veggies, like the black beans below. Just drain, rinse, coat with some seasoning and heat up in the microwave. It adds such an incredible depth of flavor!

This recipe, seriously, it’s so crazy simple. Just put it all in a bowl and whisk. Now if you’re like me and have allergies and asthma, it’s totally OK to wear a mask when you whisk this all together.

With wedding season approaching, these would make cute little gifts along with a few personal recipes using the spice rub.

As you’ll see in some upcoming recipes, this Smokey Chipotle Chili Spice Rub works absolutely amazing on shrimp. We ate an entire pound of jumbo shrimp straight out of the pan as it was THAT good!

If you’re into making homemade gifts, little jarred gifts of this spice mixture is a great thing to give out as hostess gifts or to take to someone’s house. Plus with summer coming up, this an awesome thing to bring to a cookout and share!  I sprinkle this stuff on everything!

Even veggies get a huge boost of flavor when you sprinkle this spice rub on it!

Questions

  1. Do I have to use smoked paprika? No, you can totally go with sweet Hungarian paprika. I, personally, wouldn’t go with Spanish as I find them to be too hot in this recipe. However if your taste buds can handle the heat, have at it!
  2. How long does a jar stay fresh? Like most dried spices, about 3-6 months.
  3. Can I use this in the Instant Pot or Slow Cooker? ABSOLUTELY! It’s just like any other spice, just add to the mix.
  4. Does this work on all protein? I’ve used it on various cuts of beef, chicken, pork, seafood, poultry and it’s all amazing. Try it on roasted veggies – seriously, it’s incredible!

We make our own spice rubs and I wanted a new rub using smoked paprika, This rub delivered great flavors and was perfect on our shrimp. I am planning on making homemade spice rubs for my kids for Holiday gifts. This wll be a perfect addition to the collection.

Your spice rub helped me so much. I am hopeless with the right ratios for a chili spice rub and I finally got it right by using your fabulous recipe as a guide. It is a really delicious spice rub that developed so much flavor for my ribs. Thank you so much for this gift of a recipe!
