Layers of creamy vanilla ice cream, cookie dessert toppings, & chocolate sheets covered in whipped cream for the perfect ice cream dessert!

This post is in partnership with Acorn Influence & Edy’s/Dreyer’s and Mondelez. Thank you for supporting the brands I love!
Oh y’all, I have one amazing and EASY must-make dessert today!  I’ve teamed up with friends from Edy’s/Dreyer’s ice cream, OREO, Chips Ahoy!, Walmart, and Ibotta to bring you the best treat! This viennetta style dessert combines 3 of my favorite ingredients:
  • Ice Cream
  • Cookies
  • Chocolate
It’s a dessert WIN for you and the whole family!

Let’s talk about this dessert

A traditional viennetta dessert is made with whipping cream, vanilla, and sweetened condensed milk that’s whipped until stiff and firm (but still spreadable). Now I love the traditional version, but it’s labor-intensive and with how much I work/we all work, I simply don’t have time for that. So when the amazing people from Edy’s/Dreyer’s wanted a recipe showcasing their ice creams, I knew I had to make this.

And folks, I have to be honest here – I actually LOVED this version with the ice cream a million times better. It’s obviously super easy to make and takes practically no time to assemble. But when it’s made with the Edy’s/Dreyer’s ice cream (seriously that Slow Churned® is AMAZING!), the cookie dessert toppings, and the chocolate sheets – it’s pure magic. For me, it was the perfect frozen dessert bite – a little bit of ice cream, chocolate, cookie dessert toppings, whipped cream, and hard chocolate sauce. Do yourself and your family a favor and make this!

Grab your ingredients

This is such a fun, easy, and DELICIOUS treat that everyone will love. Before you grab the kiddos and head off to your local Walmart to pick up these ingredients, make sure you download the Ibotta app. Once installed, search for Walmart and the savings for the below products. I’ve been using Ibotta for years and absolutely love it.

Ibotta Edy's / Dreyer's

What I also love about it is you can search within it for savings for Walmart – either in the store, pick up, or delivery! With how busy I am these days, I love that I can use Ibotta in conjunction with the Walmart app and do all of my shopping. Within Ibotta and the Walmart section, search for the Edy’s/Dreyer’s ice cream savings special. Next, I add it to my cart, pay, and schedule my pickup time. Once I pay, it syncs with the Ibotta app and automatically adds my savings and money back to my account! If you hurry, you can get $1.00 off the toppings!

Oreo Ibotta Offer!
Chips Ahoy! Ibotta Offer!

All I have left to do is just jump in my car, head to my local Walmart, park in the pick-up area, and have my groceries loaded into my trunk. Seriously, this is SUCH a huge help for busy folks like myself!

I’m so thankful that where I live now, I have 5 Walmarts that are all close to me, and I never have to worry about them not having a product in stock. Plus the cost-savings already are incredible. Add in the Ibotta savings, and you have one sweet deal!  Know what else is sweet? This Homemade Ice Cream Viennetta Cookie Dessert! I think we need to grab our ingredients!
  • Edy’s/Dreyer’s Slow Churned® Classic Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Nabisco Chips Ahoy! Dessert Toppings
  • Nabisco Oreo Cookie Pieces Dessert Toppings
  • Prepared stabilized whipped cream
  • Melted chocolate
  • Hard Shell Chocolate Sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • For snacking while your viennetta freezes, some Edy’s/Dreyer’s Original Rocky Road Ice Cream

We all scream for ICE CREAM!

We are HUGE ice cream fans to the point I have at least 4 types on hand at all times. For me, I’m about flavor and texture, something that Edy’s/Dreyer’s has nailed perfectly!  Their Slow Churned® light ice cream has one-third fewer calories and only half of the fat BUT, check it out guys – it has all of the creaminess and goodness of regular ice cream!
Want to know how to they do this magical deliciousness? Well, they start with fresh milk and cream. Next, they mix their ice cream extra slowly while keeping it sustained at extra low temperatures., Extra Slow and Extra Low = Extra Slow Churned perfection!

Make Chocolate Sheets

Now the very first thing you want to do is grab your freezer-safe loaf pan, some parchment paper, and a marker/pencil. Trace 3 separate outlines of your loaf on the parchment paper. *Since my loaf pan does not have straight-side walls, I had to start with the largest trace and make the next two smaller.
  1. Place your parchment paper onto a pan, traced lines facing down. Spread out the melted chocolate inside the traced lines into an even layer. It’s okay if you got a little over the line. Once it’s hard, you can use a thin-bladed knife to cut it to size.
  2. Stick the pan into the freezer until solid.

Soften the Ice Cream

You will need to take your ice cream out of the freezer and allow it to soften. Depending on where you live and how warm it is in your kitchen it can take a few minutes to 5-10 minutes. Living in Arizona mine softened pretty quickly.

Note – do not let it melt. You want it to be scoopable and spreadable but not melted.

Prepare the Loaf Pan

  1. While the ice cream is softening, line a freezer-safe loaf pan with plastic wrap with at least a 6” overhang on all sides. Next, line the bottom and up the ends with parchment paper with at least a 2” overhang sling. This will make it easier to unmold the dessert.

Assemble the Viennetta

This is the fun part. This is where you can get the family involved. I had one of my students help me in the kitchen. She has such a HUGE sweet tooth and I knew she would love this.
  1. Spoon out 1/3rd of the ice cream into the lined pan. Spread it out into an even layer. Follow this up with 1/2 of the Nabisco Chips Ahoy! Dessert Toppings.
  2. From the fridge, grab one of your chocolate sheets and place that on top of the cookie pieces.
  3. Add another third of the ice cream, smoothing it out into an even layer followed by 1/2 of the Oreo Cookie Pieces Dessert Toppings and one more chocolate sheet.
  4. Repeat one more time adding the remaining third of the ice cream, the remaining Oreo, and Chips Ahoy! Cookie pieces and the final chocolate sheet.

Chef’s Tip about ambient temperature

One thing to keep in mind when making this is that you’re working with ice cream and chocolate.
  • If your kitchen is warm, you may have to stop after each layer and pop it back into the freezer to firm up. OR
  • Place an ice pack under your ice cream, one under the loaf pan you’re assembling the viennetta in, and one under the chocolate sheets pan.
Doing these items will help you immensely when making this dessert. For me, living in Arizona, even with the AC on, I opted to use the freezer packs to assemble this as it took me about 5-10 minutes to assemble.

Wrap it up and Freeze

  1. Grab the overhang of the parchment paper and plastic wrap to wrap the dessert up. Gently press the top down as you are wrapping it as this will help.
  2. Place the viennetta into the freezer freezing for at least 6 hours or overnight.

Let’s Take An Ice Cream Break!

Now, normally this is the hard part – waiting for your dessert to freeze. Sure you need to let your viennetta freeze solid but I’m completely OK waiting as I’m fixing myself a bowl of Edy’s/Dreyer’s Rocky Road ice cream! Just scoop some into a dish, drizzle some Hard Shell Chocolate Sauce, and sprinkle on a few pieces of Oreo Cookie Pieces Dessert Toppings.

If you live west of the Rockies, or in Texas, you will see Dreyer’s on the shelf, but if you’re to the East, it will be Edy’s! This is because William Dreyer and Joseph Edy collaborated and changed the ice cream world as we know it. In 1929 they created one of the first-ever ice creams with mix-ins. Yep, you guessed it, Rocky Road!

Rocky Road Ice Cream

WOOHOO! Let’s finish this Viennetta and eat!

Remove the frozen viennetta from the freezer and remove it from the loaf pan, invert it so the bottom of the loaf pan is now facing upwards, onto a freezer-safe serving dish.

Slice & Serve

  1. When ready to serve, dip a sharp knife into hot water, wipe it dry and then slice and serve.

How to Store

Store any remaining cookie dessert, covered with plastic wrap in the freezer for up to one week. What I like to do is slice up pieces, wrap each one individually in plastic wrap and place the wrapped slices into a freezer-safe bag. This way all I have to do is grab a slice and enjoy!

Ingredients

Viennetta

  • 1 – 1.5-quart Edy’s/Dreyer’s Slow Churned® Classic Vanilla Ice Cream
  • 1 – 6 oz package Nabisco Chips Ahoy! Dessert Toppings
  • 1 – 6 oz package Nabisco Oreo Cookie Pieces Dessert Toppings
  • 6 cups prepared stabilized whipped cream
  • 4 ounces melted chocolate
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoon of Hard Shell Chocolate Sauce (store-bought or homemade)

For snacking while your Viennetta freezes

  • 1 – 1.5-quart Edy’s/Dreyer’s Original Rocky Road Ice Cream

Instructions

Chocolate Sheets

  1. Make the chocolate sheets by tracing your pan on parchment paper. Repeat this three times. Turn the sheet over and place it on a baking pan (that can fit in your fridge).
  2. With an offset spatula, evenly divide the melted chocolate into the center of each traced outline for your baking pan. Smooth it out to an even layer. If your pan is flared out, (meaning not straight-walled) you may need to make one the full size and the other two a tad smaller to fit inside of the pan.
  3. Place in the fridge to firm up.

Prepare the Loaf Pan

  1. While the ice cream is softening, line an 11×6” freezer-safe loaf pan with plastic wrap with at least a 6” overhang on all sides. Next, line the bottom and up the ends with parchment paper with at least a 2” overhang sling. This will make it easier to unmold the dessert. *Note: you can use a standard loaf pan as well if that’s all you have.

Assemble the Viennetta

*note: if your kitchen area is warm, work fast when assembling or place freezer packs underneath the ice cream and the baking pan.

  1. Remove the Edy’s/Dreyer’s Slow Churned® Classic Vanilla Ice Cream from the freezer and allow it soften enough so you can spread it out. Do not let it melt.
  2. Spoon out 1/3rd of the ice cream into the lined pan. Spread it out into an even layer. Follow this up with 1/2 of the Nabisco Chips Ahoy! Dessert Toppings.
  3. From the fridge, grab one of your chocolate sheets and place that on top of the cookie pieces.
  4. Add another third of the ice cream, smoothing it out into an even layer followed by 1/2 of the Oreo Cookie Pieces Dessert Toppings and one more chocolate sheet.
  5. Repeat one more time adding the remaining third of the ice cream, the remaining Oreo, and Chips Ahoy! Cookie pieces and the final chocolate sheet.
  6. Grab the overhang of the parchment paper and plastic wrap to wrap the dessert up. Gently press the top down as you are wrapping it as this will help.
  7. Place the Viennetta into the freezer freezing for at least 6 hours or overnight.

Ice Cream Snack Break

  1. While the Viennetta is freezing, scoop a couple of Rocky Road ice cream into a dish, drizzle on 2 tablespoon of Hard Shell Chocolate Sauce, and sprinkle on a few pieces of Oreo Cookie Pieces Dessert Toppings.

Frost and enjoy the Viennetta

  1. Remove the frozen Viennetta from the freezer and remove it from the loaf pan, invert it so the bottom of the loaf pan is now facing upwards, onto a freezer-safe serving dish. Remove the plastic wrap, parchment paper and discard.
  2. Working quickly, spread out the prepared whipped cream all over the Viennetta. Drizzle on the hard shell chocolate sauce and the remaining cookie dessert toppings. If necessary, place the Viennetta back into the freezer (uncovered) for 15-30 minutes to harden.
  3. When ready to serve, dip a sharp knife into hot water, wipe it dry and then slice and serve.
  4. Store any remaining cookie dessert, covered with plastic wrap in the freezer for up to one week.
