All the amazing flavors of campfire beans and weenies but pizzafied! Homemade pizza dough topped with a cheddar-mozzarella blend of cheese, baked beans, sliced hot dogs,  tater tots, and more cheese for one killer campfire cheesy pizza!

So unless you’re brand-spanking new to my website, y’all know that I’m totally #pizzadventurous ! I eat pizza in some fashion every single day and think it truly should be a food group.

Pizza just makes me happy.

Campfire Deliciousness

So full disclosure, I have never gone camping.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE  bonfires, sitting outside with a huge fire-making food via the campfire but when it comes to bedtime and facilities, this girl needs modern amenities. Yes, I require a real bed indoors and a real bathroom indoors.

One of my FAVORITE things to cook campfire is hot dogs, baked beans, and crispy tater tots in a cast-iron skillet. You can also do this on the grill, pizza oven, or in your home oven.

…and that’s where the inspiration for this pizza came.

Grab Your Ingredients!

This 5-ingredient recipe is so simple to make and you can completely customize it! You’ll need:

  • 1 Prepared Pizza Dough ball that’s ready to be stretched
  • Baked beans – it’s best if they are thicker in sauce (these are my favorite)
  • Hot Dogs
  • Tater Tots – or any other frozen potato would work
  • Cheese – I loved a blend of sharp cheddar and mozzarella

Campfire Pizza

Let’s Make Pizza!

Oh, how I love those 3 little words… “let’s make pizza!” lol This pizza can be made in a home oven, outdoor pizza oven, or yes, on a campfire (provided you have a large cast-iron skillet and a grate to keep the pan above the fire. You just have to adjust how long you cook/bake it and if you’re using a skillet or not.

For a home oven:

  1. Place one rack on the lower third of your oven. On that place a pizza stone. It’s recommended you use 2 when you bake pizza. Place another rack on the upper ledge and place the 2nd pizza stone there. Preheat the oven to 500 F or 550 F (highest setting).
  2. On a pizza peel, sprinkle it with bench flour. You will need it to help slide the pizza off. Place your stretched pizza dough.

Bench Flour

Bench flour is 80% 00 flour or bread flour and 20% semolina flour mixed together. If you use straight flour, your dough will have a harder time sliding off of the pizza

  1. Stretch the pizza into a 12″ circle leaving what’s called the ‘cornicione’ or raised rim of the pizza. You’re pushing the air towards the top edge leaving about a 1/4-1/2″ rim. This what will puff up and give you that airy crust.

Campfire Pizza

  1. Add on half of the cheese mixture, followed by the baked beans. If your sauce is thin, only add a little bit (or thicken it on the stovetop) before drizzling on. A thinner sauce will cause the pizza to be soggy.
  2. Add the sliced hot dogs on top and then add the partially cooked tater tots (you don’t have to pre-cook them but they do have to be thawed).

Campfire Pizza

  1. Add the rest of the cheese as that’s what’s needed to help “glue” it all together when you put the dough into the oven.
  2. Working quickly, open the oven door and set the tip of the pizza peel near the back of the stone. Pull the pizza peel toward you, letting the pizza slide onto the stone. Quickly close the door.
  3. Bake your pizza for 8-9 minutes, turning halfway through baking using the pizza peel.

Campfire Pizza

  1. Remove the pizza from the oven and place it on a pizza pan or a large cutting board.
  2. Slice and ENJOY!

Be Pizza Adventurous!

I know, I know – this isn’t a classic cheese and red sauce pizza. And I’m totally ok with that. I absolutely LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this pizza and make it quite often.

It’s a great way to use up leftover baked beans, those 1 or 2 hotdogs left in the package in the fridge, and that less-than-half full bag of tots.

Campfire Cooking Instructions

The trick to make this at camp with a cast iron pan you’ll need to tweak the instructions just a bit:

  1. Add about 1 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil to a 10-12″ cast iron pan coating the sides and bottom. Add your stretched dough to the pan, form it, and place it on a grate above a fairly hot fire.
  2. Cook for about 3-5 minutes or just until the bottom has firmed up and starts to turn golden brown.
  3. Carefully remove the hot pan from the fire, using tongs, CAREFULLY lift the crust and flip it over in the pan.
  4. Working quickly, add your toppings, and place the pan back onto the grate, cover with foil or a lid cooking for another 3-5 minutes or until it’s cooked through. Make sure to keep an eye on it as you don’t want to burn it.

Recipe Substitutions

When I posted this picture in my TKW Facebook Foodie Group, I asked folks if this is something they would try.  While only a few were pizza purists many said absolutely but without the beans. Here are some excellent substitutions that I’ve used in this recipe that is AMAZING!

  • Beans – simply omit. Since you won’t have any sauce from the beans you could use Chili dog sauce or BBQ sauce.
  • Hot Dogs – you can use any type of cooked sausage, kielbasa, or meat substitute.
  • Tater Tots – Fries, hashbrowns nuggets, cubed cooked potatoes, canned potatoes

Campfire Pizza

Additions

I always tell folks, go with what you have on hand.

  • Caramelized or cooked onions
  • Bacon – um bacon makes everything better!  Just make sure it’s cooked before you put it on
  • Mexican – go with black beans, corn, taco meat, chorizo, and top with  salsa and shredded lettuce when it’s done
  • Kielbasa – add swiss cheese, sliced kielbasa, drained sauerkraut, and whole grain mustard
