Standing over a sandwich press for an hour when you’re trying to feed a crowd just isn’t practical. As a pitmaster, I bake these Cubano sliders in a single dish. It’s hands down the easiest way to turn extra pulled pork into a game-day favorite that vanishes in minutes.
All the Cubano Flavor, Half the Effort
Growing up, game days always meant a massive spread, but standard ham and cheese sliders were the first thing to vanish. Wanting to elevate that classic party staple, I started combining traditional Cuban sandwich flavors with my pitmaster roots. Every pitmaster knows that smoking a pork butt leaves you with a glorious mountain of extra pulled pork, and turning those day-two leftovers into hot, pull-apart sliders is the ultimate upgrade.
By layering your leftover smoked pork butt into a single baking dish and roasting the whole batch together, you get all the complex, savory layers of a traditional Cubano without spending hours standing over a sandwich press.
What You Need for Baked Cubanos
Grab your leftover smoked pork butt and a few deli staples to build this flavor-packed slider spread.
- Dairy: Swiss Cheese and Butter
- Sliced Dill Pickles
- Yellow Mustard
- Brioche Slider Buns
- Black Forest ham or any thinly sliced deli ham
- Ribnoxious Seasoning
How to Make Baked Cubano Sliders
Assembly takes about five minutes, leaving you 20 minutes to set out some chips or whip up a quick game-day dip while they bake.
- Prep the Oven & Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly spray a 12×5.5-inch biscotti pan (or an 8×11-inch baking dish) with nonstick cooking spray.
- Build the Base: Place the bottom half of the brioche rolls into the prepared pan and spread or squirt an even layer of yellow mustard.
- Layer the Meats & Fillings: Layer the sliced Black Forest ham, then the smoked shredded pork butt, and finally the pickle slices.
- Cheese, Mustard & Cap: Lay the Swiss cheese slices evenly over the pickles, spread an additional layer of mustard, and place the top brioche buns over the sliders.
- Mix & Brush the Butter: In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter and Ribnoxious seasoning. Brush generously over the top of the buns.
- Bake & Brown: Cover tightly with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until the cheese is gooey and the tops are golden brown.
How to Reheat
- Oven: Place the sliders on a baking sheet, cover loosely with foil (to prevent the tops from overbrowning), and bake at 350°F (176 °C) for about 10 minutes, or until heated through.
Baked Cubano Slider FAQs
- Can I make these sliders ahead of time? Yes. You can assemble the sliders (without brushing the butter on top) up to 24 hours in advance. Wrap the dish tightly in plastic wrap and chill. When ready, remove the wrap, brush with the BBQ butter, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 22-25 minutes until fully heated through.
- What types of buns work best? Typically, most folks reach for the Hawaiian ones (and they are delicious), but honestly, it’s a PITA cutting them afterward. I love the individual brioche ones that you don’t have to cut and feel more like a sandwich. I buy my buns at Aldi. They are inexpensive and have an amazing flavor!
- How do I keep the sliders from sliding apart in the pan? Since they are placed as individual sliders, the trick is to make sure they touch in the pan. This helps them support each other.
- What type of pan should I cook these in? You can use any heat-safe pan that they can fit in. You can also use those disposable foil pans, too. When it’s just us, I use my favorite Biscotti pan.
What to Serve with Cubano Sliders
- Game Day Spread: Serve alongside potato chips, smoked Fritos, Smoked Cream Cheese Ball Loaded Bites, soft pretzels, and cold beverages.
- Game Day Dips: These sliders pair incredibly well with a warm, scoopable dip. Set them out alongside a hot skillet of Jalapeño Popper Dip, Beer Cheese Dip, Smoked Cream Cheese with Blueberry and Jalapeño Jam, or Smoked Caramelized Onion Dip.
- Weeknight Dinner: Pair with a fresh, crisp green salad, Simply The Best Mac and Cheese, or classic coleslaw.
- Backyard BBQ Classics: If you’re serving these at a cookout, you can’t go wrong pairing them with Loaded Potato Salad, Smoked Mac and Cheese, or Grilled Corn on the Cob.
Cubano Slider Variations & Swaps
- Buns: If you can’t find individual brioche slider buns, you can use other slider buns (pretzel buns work) or use the Hawaiian packaged buns.
- Mustard: Sub Dijon mustard, honey mustard, or spicy brown mustard if you prefer an extra kick.
- Cheese: Provolone or Gruyère melt just as well if Swiss isn’t your favorite.
- Optional Add-ins: Add pickled jalapeños for heat or a light drizzle of sweet BBQ sauce over the pork.
Other Ways to Make Cubano Sliders
Smoker (Slow Version)
Just like in my Gobbler Sliders, this method allows for a bit more smoke to permeate into the dish.
- Preheat the smoker to 250°F (121°C) and use a fruit wood pellet.
- Assemble and place on the top rack. Smoke for 30 minutes, then uncover, raise the temp to 275°F (135°C), and smoke until the cheese is melted and the tops are toasted.
Smoker (Fast Version)
This is when you want to treat your smoker like an oven. *If you have a Yoder Smoker YS640 and the pizza oven, use that!
- Preheat the smoker to 350°F (176°C) and use a fruit wood pellet.
- Assemble and place on the top rack. Smoke for 15 minutes, then uncover and smoke for another 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the tops are toasted.
BBQ Grill
For this, you’ll need to set up the grill for 2-zone cooking (indirect and direct). Although your pan won’t be on the flames, you may want to use a foil pan here just in case.
- Preheat the direct side of your grill to 350°F (176°C).
- Place the covered, assembled pan of rolls on the indirect side and cook for 15 minutes. Remove the cover and continue cooking for another 10-15 minutes, or until the tops are toasted and the cheese is melted.
