So the other day I had a bug up my butt about ‘pitching stuff that we just didn’t need’.  Fortunately Mr. Fantabulous hates clutter (though he fully supports my need for Kitchen Porn) so he tackled the one room and I the kitchen cabinets.  Word to you all..  under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should a kitchen have more than 1 designated “Junk Drawer”.  Um… we had 5 *hides face in shame*  I had gadgets and gidzmos mixed in with rolls of duct tape, peroxide and saran wrap.  Yeah… no more!  After purging my drawers for 5 hours (LOL that sounds dirty! haha), I now have 1/2 of a junk drawer and the others are all arranged like a full blown professional kitchen!

Well while I was doing this I knew I couldn’t really dedicate much time to cooking so out came one of my 9 crockpots (yes, I have that many… again, KITCHEN PORN people) and threw in a frozen pork loin, saw some apples in the basket that were on the verge of past their prime and an onion for kicks.

8 hours later out came this pork roast that was so succulent and juicy; sweet yet with a background hint of heat and a gravy unlike no other.

Now most of you are probably used to the savory/bbq-y type pork loins which are awesome as well so realize that this, with the apples and onions make it more on the sweeter side. Truth be told, Mr. Fantabulous wasn’t too keen on the idea of it (he’s not a big pork fan anyway) however once he got to the 2nd bite he really, really loved it.

Ingredients

  • 2–4lb Pork Loin with just a hint of fat around it (can be frozen or not)
  • 2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 3 apples, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 whole yellow onion cut into 1/4” slices
  • 1 cup of white wine or chicken stock

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix together the garlic powder, salt, pepper, thyme, chili powder and cinnamon.
  2. Place the pork loin on a plate and rub all sides with the spice mixture.
  3. In the crockpot, place the seasoned pork loin.
  4. Add the minced garlic, onion and apple chunks.
  5. Add the white wine/chicken stock.
  6. Cover and put on low.
  7. Cook for 8 hours or when internal temperature is 160F.
  8. Remove the meat from the crock pot, wrap it with aluminum foil and let it rest.
  9. If you want a gravy, place the remaining items from the crockpot into a pot.
  10. Place the flame to high cook for 5-10 minutes over high heat to reduce the sauce to a more creamier sauce. If you want, you can use an immersion blender to make a more creamy gravy.
  11. Cut the meat into thin slices, and either serve with the apples and the onions just as they are out of the pot, caramelized and soft, or dress the meat with a creamy and sweet gravy.

I love my Wonderbag. I made mine outta an old cotton dress and Styrofoam beads from an old bean bag. as I couldn’t afford to buy one. but it’s brilliant. basically you bring your stew to a boil, boil for 20minutes . put it in the bag, close it up n come back a few hours later. saves on electricity. I often make rice pudding in mine . I boil for 10 minutes and its ready in 3hours.

TKWA….You need to check out this Wonderbag… It is soooooooooo cool… Its a non-electric crock pot.. You boil the food first then put it in the Wonderbag to finish cooking… I was curious about it so I googled it…

Thank you so much Dawn! What’s a wonderbag? Is that one of those bag-type-things that you put your food in inside of the crock and cook it in there that way there’s no cleanup with the crockpot?

I found your recipe via Pinterest. My pork loin was just over 3 lbs. and thawed, so 8 hours was a wee bit long, just a tip for others, but there were no complaints from my family or my guests! I also thickened the juices to make gravy and it was delicious on mashed potatoes. Thanks for the great recipe! I would have never thought of apples and onions!

Hi Julia! I think the 8 hours is what I went with due to the crock pot I used wasn’t a higher wattage. The higher the wattage, the more powerful the crock and most likely the less time needed. Thanks though for pointing it out! When was yours done?

I’m thrilled your family and guests loved it! Yeah, apples and onions are my favorite things to add to a pork roast. Even when I make say a New Years Pork roast with sauerkraut I’ll put that in with it as that adds such an amazing depth of flavor.

Tee hee 🙂 That’s awesome to hear Robin, thank you! Most people wouldn’t think apples and onions go well with pork but it’s one of my favorite combinations! It just so tender and juicy! I’m thrilled that your family loved it!

I hear you on the drawer purging. I don’t have five, but I have a giant file drawer I use as my junk drawer. I think you win the award for the world’s most crock pot’s; and I love that you made this in one of them!

      Hey Kari 🙂

HAHA… nice! I did another purge tonight. I have, okay “had” a kitchen drawer FULL of lids. Thing is, I had no clue if I had the bowls left or not. So one by one I went through and matched lid to bowl. If it didn’t have a lid or a corresponding bowl, it got pitched! My cupboards look empty now!

Yeah I love crockpots. I have teeny ones all the way up to my behemoth 7qrt cast aluminum All Clad one (it’s my fav!!!).
