Holy crap is it really Sunday? Man this week FLEW by for me! See I had to go out of town for 3 days which always is seems to pass the time by for me. I spent most of Tuesday in Bedford, PA at this all-day managers meeting at this really cool historic resort. It’s located in the Allegheny Mountains of south Pennsylvania. For more than 200 years, the eight mineral springs located on the resort’s property served as an important gathering place. Eventually, the resort would be the site of many significant moments in American history, hosting a long list of celebrities, wealthy clientele, corporate magnates and dignitaries from around the world. To date, the resort has hosted 10 U.S. presidents, seven of whom visited during their presidency. Sure we all think of resorts as plush and lavish; the latest and greatest but there is something to be said about original hard wood flooring and decor.
That night I continued up towards Harrisburg where the fun stopped. The city itself is so awesome and running along the Susquehanna River trail was truly breathtaking which I’ll get more into in a bit. No, let’s talk about this hotel I checked in. Now it was a nice hotel, was moderately priced and in a great location. I didn’t pull in til about 8pm or so. As I approached my room I “smelled” something off. As I opened the door I about threw up from the stench. It literally smelled like urine. I mean BAD! So I drug my stuff back down to the front desk of which I asked for another room. Unfortunately there was a huge convention in town and there were no rooms available there or in any of the neighboring hotels. So she sent the cleaning folks back up. While we waited on housekeeping I took her to the room and as we approached you could see her nose start to crinkle up from the smell. While they cleaned it I went out to grab some dinner. I was tired and hungry. I found this adorable little diner and settled on ordering their homemade chicken pot pie.
Now when this dish came to me I gave it a look. It did NOT look like the chicken pot pie I was used to. To me this was chicken and dumplings however I come to find out what they served is Amish Chicken Pot Pie. While it was not visually appetizing at all I know better than to judge food by its appearance. Even the ugliest foods can taste awesome! I mean oatmeal isn’t exactly sexy but I friggen love it! So I took a bite and immediately my brain went “Whoa! This isn’t right! Something’s wrong here.” All I got was SUCH an overpowering taste of thyme that I actually choked for a second. It took my breath away.
I took another bite and still was like “No, something doesn’t taste right. It tastes… Hmmm.” Finally on the third bite I knew what it was. This was spoiled. The chicken was slimy and gray. I honestly think they dumped extra thyme in it to kill the spoiled taste. So I informed the waitress that it was spoiled and you would have thought I insulted her first-born. Needless to say she, nor the diner were pleased that I didn’t want to eat their spoiled food. Well about 2am, it, along with the now sewer gas smell in my room woke me up. I had food poisoning – yes from 3 bites. Needless to say Wednesday was NOT a fun day for me at work. However thankfully I didn’t eat a lot of that food so by Wednesday evening I felt better. Yes I called the establishment just to let them know that I did in fact get ill. I was met with a “Well we took it off your bill, what more do you want???” Yeah, WRONG answer people. So I spoke my mind using words that had more than 3 syllables in a rather not nice tone. I kept my composure and told them I was contacting the health board filing a complaint. Talk about a change of attitude on the other end of the phone. I politely told them to have a nice day and wish them well in where ever their diner future may or may not lie. I mean seriously people!
So after a day of nothing but saltines and ginger ale I finally got a slight appetite Wednesday night. While exploring downtown Harrisburg I found the most amazing river trail! Since I was dressed in my work out clothes I opted to take a leisure walk/jog downtown along the river. You want to talk about gorgeous! The architecture alone was gorgeous and clean! Now I did try to take pictures while I was jogging but considering I can’t walk and chew gum, this wasn’t a smart idea as I tripped a few times, almost fell twice and then almost dropped my phone. Yeah THAT I would not have been happy about.
I found this awesome cafe along the way where I got an awesome cilantro and lime santa fe chicken salad. It was light and bright and packed with so much flavor! On the way home I stopped and got some pretzels and chocolate (I mean I’m in a hotel – you need chocolate while in a hotel) and vegged out with some of the strangest tv shows ever! See I almost never watch tv. There are a few shows I like but I have more important things to work on. Plus I just can’t sit still and do… nothing. Let’s see I saw this one show about strange addictions. Say what? People eat dirt.. ON PURPOSE? And they think it tastes… good??? WTH? Another one was this lady that let her hair grow for 24+ years, it weighed like 12 pounds dry, 25 pounds wet. She was suffering from severe migraines and neck pain but refused to cut her hair. Maybe I’m living under a rock but I had no idea stuff like this existed.
Next was some show about being extremely cheap. This one episode the dad put a timer on top of the fridge that when opened you could only keep it open for 24 seconds AND you could only go into the fridge once a day per person. If you went in more than once OR more than 24 seconds you had to pay him. Are you kidding me? OH OH OH! Also he would take empty water bottles, fill them with water from a garden hose (okay we won’t even go into how unsanitary this is) and then close them up. NOW here’s the kicker… he would take clear nail polish and ‘glue’ the lid to the seal so it would make a ‘crack’ sound like you were opening up a fresh bottle. Really? No, REALLY?
Finally Thursday it was time to come home after my last meeting. About 2 hours into my trip I hit a pretty decent snow storm in the mountains. Only in Pennsylvania will you have a 72F day and then the very next day have 3″ of snow AND have it be 31F! *shakes her head* So I took my time and got home safe and sound. Mr. Fantabulous was happy to see me though I think it’s because he was almost out of all the food I pre-made for him. LOL
This week should be a pretty busy for me as well work-wise however I have a bunch of new recipes that I can’t wait to share. Plus I also have to get my list together for Thanksgiving. So for Thanksgiving, will you be hosting it or will you be going to someone else’s house? I’m pretty sure it’ll just be the two of us which I’m completely fine with. It’s easier on me though I still cook enough for an army.
So here’s to an amazing week for you and I!
Best Kitchen Wishes!
