Happy Sunday TKW Family and Happy almost Thanksgiving! When it comes to Thanksgiving – do you cook or do you go elsewhere? What about the number of times you eat that day? Growing up we often had 2-3 Thanksgiving meals on a single day. If Grandma wanted to cook and so did my Mom we’d have to go to Grandma’s house at 11 am for a full meal and then come home to my Mom’s full meal at 3 pm! THEN.. those family and friends that didn’t make it to either meal would come over around 8 pm for pretty much a full meal as there were leftovers for days!
Normally I cook for just us. Sometimes we have friends join us but I kind of like the intimacy of just us for dinner. Plus if I’m being completely transparent here – we can eat it in our PJs, my hair can be pulled in a ponytail and I can just be relaxed. No set schedule you know?
Thanksgiving Tips
Did you take your turkey out of the freezer yet? Do you know when you should?
I put together a great guide HERE on Turkey 101 and how to properly thaw a turkey!
Refrigerator Thaw
Thawing in the refrigerator is the only safe way to defrost a frozen turkey. Here’s how to do it:
- Make sure that your refrigerator is at 40°F or colder.
- Leave the turkey in its original wrapper.
- Thaw breast side up.
- Place the bird on a tray or in a pan to collect any juices that leak out.
- Keep it at the bottom of your fridge so that any leakage won’t contaminate anything below.
- Allow 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds of frozen turkey.
Here are the basic weight guidelines for refrigerator thawing:
Turkey Weight Thawing Time Up to 12 lbs 1-3 days 12 to 16 lbs 3-4 days 16 to 20 lbs 4-5 days 20 to 24 lbs 5-6 days

You’ll DEFINITELY want to check out this post as it gives the times for stuffed and unstuffed!
Cooking Temps
♥ For whole turkeys, turkey breasts or even a boneless bird cook them at 325F (standard or convection). Your bird will state what temperature to cook it at. Some manufacturers say 325F while others say 350F. I personally go with 325F as that falls into alignment with the USDA.
