Stop settling for a boring, plain bag of pretzels. By adding a savory, spiced cheddar queso seasoning and a few pantry staples, you can elevate a standard snack into something truly addictive. They’re zesty, crunchy, and craveable.
Confession: I’ll admit it: I am a total chip fiend who would reach for a salty, crunchy bag of snacks over a dessert every single time. There is just something about that ‘crunchification’ and the perfect textual juxtaposition of a salty snack that hits the spot like nothing else can. So it’s only natural that I share some recipes showing how you can elevate that simple bag of snacks.
Turn a Basic Bag into a Cheesy Obsession
While I love pretzels, they are typically the ‘filler’ snack left behind in the bowl after the other chips are gone. This easy recipe is the official glow-up for that forgotten bag in your pantry. By using a bold blend of queso nacho seasoning & pantry staples, you’re creating a crust that’s salty, savory, cheesy, and impossible to put down.
There’s no complicated techniques here – just a quick assembly followed by a 20-25 minute bake that locks in all that zest flavor onto every single twist, turn, and edge of the pretzel. Whether you’re gearing up for a game night, a backyard cookout, or a movie marathon, these are the crunchy, bold bites your gathering has been missing.
Queso Nacho Seasoned Pretzel Ingredients
The star of this recipe is the Queso Nacho Seasoning. This is one of those ingredients that I’ve used a bajillion different ways – from this recipe to popcorn, potatoes to burgers, chicken to tacos, and even on pizza. Trust me, it’s a pantry requirement in my house!
- Neutral Oil: Avocado or grape seed oil is my choice
- Smoked Paprika
- Pretzels: pretty much any hard bagged pretzels work
How to Make Nacho Queso Seasoned Pretzels
This takes maybe 2 minutes to assemble and about 20-ish minutes to bake.
- While the oven preheats, line a half-sheet pan with parchment paper; set aside.
- To a bowl, add the avocado oil, queso nacho seasoning, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Whisk to combine.
- Dump the pretzels into a zip-top plastic bag, pour the cheese mixture over them, close the bag, and shake to coat the pretzels evenly. Dump the coated pretzels onto the prepared pan and spread out into an even layer.
- Bake for 23-30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. I baked until any residual oil mixture was absorbed. Remove from the oven, sprinkle on a few more teaspoons of the Queso Nacho seasoning, and give it one final stir.
- Allow to cool completely in the pan before storing in an airtight container at room temperature.
Now, Mr. Fantabulous isn’t typically a chip eater. I mean, he’ll have a few if they are out, but he rarely will go into the pantry and grab a bag of chips just because. And the man is against having them with a sandwich (I know, he’s strange, but I love ’em so he can stay).
As these were cooling on the pan, he walked into the kitchen, which is an unspoken nudge of “Hey, honey, I’m hungry. Can you make me something to eat?” Sure, he can make himself something, but I actually prefer to do it as it helps me keep my kitchen organized. I swear the man is a 1-person cyclone after he leaves that room.
While I was prepping his lunch, I told him I was putting a few of these aside for him to try. 3 bites into his sandwich, he got up off the couch, went back to the pan, and grabbed a huge handful to put on his plate. He kissed my cheek and said, “Honey, these are amazing! You know I don’t like chips like this, but man, they are really, REALLY good!”
What to Serve With Cheese Seasoned Pretzels
Since these pretzels are salty, cheesy, and have a bit of a zesty zing, you want to serve them with items that either complement that cheesiness or cut through the salt with a bit of acid.
- Grazing Board: It would be awesome on this ultimate grazing board or this chipcuterie board
- Soup Side: Use as a “crouton” for my Homemade Creamy Broccoli Cheddar Soup, Thick & Hearty Beef & Bean Chili, or Creamy Cheesy Chicken Enchilada Soup
Recipe Substitutions & Additions
- PRETZEL SHAPE: Pretty much any shape works.
- PRETZELS: This works on many other types of chips as well. For potato chips, go with the thicker, rippled ones.
- QUESO NACHO SEASONING: If you are tight on funds but have a few boxes of mac ‘n cheese, you can use 2 of those packets as a quick swap, BUT the flavor isn’t the same.
- SPICY: Add a 1/2 teaspoon of chipotle powder for a smoky heat or cayenne pepper for a sharp, clean burn
Seasoned Pretzels FAQs
- How long does it take from start to finish? Assembly takes about a minute. They bake for about 20 minutes, and then they need to cool for about 20 minutes. So give yourself an hour.
- What do I need to bake them? Baking is the secret to the ‘glow up’. It sets the oil and seasoning onto (and into) the pretzel so it stays put. It also toasts the spices, making the flavor much more complex than raw seasoning.
- How do I store them? Once completely cooled, store them in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
- Is this gluten-free? The queso nacho seasoning is gluten-free but not certified gf. You can use gf pretzels, too.
- Is it spicy? Not at all. It’s super mild. It’s savory and cheesy with a hint of spice from the paprika.
