Oh hello Pittsburgh Summer and its 893% humidity. So for those of you that aren’t familiar with Pittsburgh Summers let me give it to you straight – they pretty much happen overnight (i.e., we skip Spring), they are hot but 85-92F is bearable BUT, yes but they are laden with rain and or severe humidity. In a nut shell, it’s pretty terrible HOWEVER that’s pretty much the only negative thing about this city. I’m a ‘burgh girl and love it. I love the food, the people, the hometown pride. Now if I could just take Scottsdale, Arizona’s weather and bring it here I’d be set.

Okay so let’s dish and by dish I mean the candy dish. What’s in yours? I grew up in a household that at least one candy dish had MARS M&M’s® in it. This is something we fought over all the time. So now fast forward some X number of years to present day (yeah… it’s a lot of years; no like A LOT. Like crypt-keeper a lot… LOL well okay not really). What’s in my candy dish? MARS M&M’s® The amazing folks at MARS M&M’s® reached out again to discuss their awesome Flavor Campaign. In this campaign they have 3 flavors that you get to help select! Well part of what they challenged me to do was show how any one of these amazing flavors M&M’s® Chili Nut, M&M’s® Honey Nut or M&M’s® Coffee Nut would rock your socks off either in a recipe or a tutorial. I mean how could I not do both?! EVERYONE loves M&M’s® so why not make some and share it with those I love?! So that’s exactly what I did in my Sweet & Sassy M&M’s® Chili Nut Chocolate Blueberry Bark! Not only are you getting seriously one of the BEST bark recipes I think I’ve made but also you are able to create your own Sweet & Sassy gift jars with downloadable printable gift tags to decorate with! I mean we all have those Sweet & Sassy moments!
Now what’s awesome is that many Walmarts are having in store demos featuring these 3 proposed flavors.
Make sure you cast your vote for your favorite flavor!
So this recipe kinda just happened out of my having WAY too much stuff in my cupboards and more importantly, my not knowing I had the stuff in the first place. Since I’ve been home with surgery I’ve been going stir crazy and I am not one to sit still. I swear the phrase “ants in the pants” is because of me. I could never sit still. Now I wasn’t hyper or the like I just was always into stuff, wanting to learn, understand how something worked. And since I didn’t require a lot of sleep I learned at a very young age that others (I call you folks ‘sleepers’) need more than 3-4 hours of sleep a night, unlike me. That being said waking my parents or siblings up in the middle of the night was a big no-no, no matter how flippin’ adorable I was as a child.
Now fast forward to now, being one-armed was an issue for me while my shoulder healed. I was limited and it sucked but I was bound and determined to do something. My real job graciously let me work from home while I healed and once my day with that was done I’d try to find stuff around the house to get into. So the one day I decided to take a deep dive into my ‘snack’ cupboard. Well wait, it’s not “my” snack pantry but more so 2 shelves are all his of his snacks (along with the entire baking rack of snacks and kitchen table of treats). 2 of the other shelves were some more baking items, sauces and oils for cooking. As I started pulling stuff out I literally had 4 boxes of unopened candy canes from honestly… I have no clue when I bought them. Maybe 2 years ago… maybe *blush*
Now if you recall my rant I went on about making true Rice Crispy bars in my Brown Rice Crispy Bars post, you know I hate it. I find it a PITA to mix up the melted butter/marshmallow mixture with the cereal. To me it turns to cement that is sticky and well, a pain. So when I made him his first batch I tried to take a short cut and use marshmallow fluff.
My bit of advice, don’t do this – not if you have a Mr. Fantabulous in your life. It works..sorta. It melts beautifully and mixes so easily BUT… <deep sigh> it never truly gets to the same bar type consistency as actual marshmallows. While they are almost identical in recipe there is one major difference between fluff and actual marshmallows. It’s the absence of gelatin. Fluff or marshmallow creme doesn’t have gelatin. Gelatin is what allows marshmallows to keep their shape and this is what actually helps keep the bars, well, in bar shapes. As for taste difference, nada.
Thus when he went to cut his bars they came out in clusters. To me I thought it was awesome as they were little nuggets of rice crispy treats. So cute and dainty ; 2 things Mr. Fantabulous is not. He’s not cute – my baby is hot as HELL and he’s about as dainty as a hippo. Sorry baby but your ginormous muscles make you nowhere near dainty.
Do you dream of food? Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night inspired to go make something that you dreamt about? See that happens to me a lot. I’ve always been a very, very vivid dreamer. Always in color and I always remember them to great detail. I also tend to re-dream the same dream from years ago. Now I’m not one to analyze dreams but often I dream of new recipes, ways to improve existing ones and so forth. Since my dreams are so vivid and “real” I will wake up from one in the middle of the night, turn on the light and literally write it down in a book beside my bed. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve done this. And what’s even more awesome/borderline freaky is that 90% of the time what I write down, all sleepy-eyed is pretty accurate measurement/ingredient-wise.
Freaky, I know! Well this dish is one of those that kind of ‘came’ to me. I went to bed craving cake and chocolate. Well in my dream I was in some kitchen, wasn’t mine, and I was being shown how to make chocolate from scratch. In the same building was a bakery. I can remember smells in my dream (like I could honestly smell cake and chocolate) wafting through the air. After my lesson I went into the bake shop and they were getting ready to discard cake scraps. Well they had made this luscious chocolate sheet cake and for some reason they made one too many. Since they were going to be closed for 2 days they were going to throw it away. I asked to take it home and they gladly obliged. As I returned to the chocolate place my mentor (no clue who it was) inquired about the cake. After telling my story I decided I had to freeze the cake and then cube it in order to take it home. I think I only had a purse and planned on putting the cake cubes in there (along with my wallet and keys). Don’t ask as it was a dream! LOL
